Developments in New Zealand now means that there are commercial quantities of high quality organic fruit and vegetables now being produced for the international market place.

Produce

The New Zealand Organic Apple Scene.

CherrypickerCommercial organic apple production first began in the early 1990's. More recently two growers in the Hawke's Bay have given a significant boost to New Zealand's organic apple production. Growing is well established in this region, with fertile soils, high sunlight hours and favourable temperatures providing natural advantages to growers. The cold winters and mild summers in the Hawke's Bay assist pest and disease management, and make this region ideal for production of organic fruits.

In addition to the Hawke's Bay, organic production has begun in Blenheim & Central Otago. Both regions are ideal for organic growing with Central Otago in particular producing very good Cox & Red Delicious apples.

Future Varieties: New varieties are the key to the success of the organic apple industry. Work is now being conducted to develop varieties that are most suited to organic production. New strains of Braeburn apples and a range of pear varieties show promise. Work will also continue on Gala, Royal Gala and Pacific Rose. The key is to develop varieties that are naturally resistant to pest and disease, yet still maintain high colour, are cosmetically clean and eat well.
